There are two (2) types of visa to enter Portugal:
- Schengen visas of short-stay
- National long-term visas
Which visa suits each situation?
If you want to travel to Portugal for: tourism; family visit; business purposes, development of business contacts, meetings or medical treatments for less than ninety (90) days – must apply for a Schengen Visa.
If you plan to travel for more than ninety (90) days, you can apply for a National Visa, which may be for Residence or Temporary Stay.

Visa appointment requests, or any other visa related communication, must be sent only to the following e-mail: sconsular.islamabad@mne.pt.
When one applies for a visa appointment, the person must do the following:
In the body of the e-mail write:
- -Name
- -Passport no.
- -E-mail address:
- -Type of visa

- Detailed and self-explanatory information on the purpose of visa request.
For national visas, attaching supporting documents to attest the purpose of stay:
– Work purposes: Company letter of invitation or work contract
– Study purposes: Letter issued by university and proof of enrollment
-Family reunion letter issued by AIMA approval for family reunion.
Emails lacking any of the aforesaid attributes shall not be responded to or treated as valid.
Because of the heavy email traffic, the Consular Section of the Embassy of Portugal in Islamabad will take up to 10 working days to reply to any email.
Please note we do not send emails which are not signed by sender, do not contain the exact purpose of the appointment and do not contain the exact contact details (name, telephone number and email address).
Schengen Visas

The Schengen Visa is an authorization issued by a Member State for the purpose of an airport stopover, transit or intention to stay for a short time in the territory of one or more Member States, allowing its holder to present himself at the external border, however, not guaranteed, the respective entry into the Schengen area, which will be decided by the border authorities on arrival. Visit here!
At the border, you may be asked to demonstrate the purpose of your visit to the Schengen Area and the conditions of your stay, including accommodation and sufficient means of subsistence for your stay and return.

Legal deadline for analysis, decision and cancellation of the visa application
Deadlines for filing the application:
Applications are submitted at least six (6) months in advance and at least fifteen (15) calendar days in individual and duly justified cases.
Deadline for the decision
The decision on applications is taken within 15 calendar days from the date of submission of an admissible application.
The period for making a decision is 45 days, in individual cases and when it is necessary to carry out a more detailed examination of the application.
Application for cancellation of visa
In case you want to cancel the visa application process and obtain your passport, you should write an email to sconsular.islamabad@mne.pt copy of the receipt visa, in order to cancel the application of your visa.
Canceling the process does not incur the refund of the amounts paid

Visa Fee
For each visa application, there is a fee charged that relates only to the processing of the visa application and does not connote the issuance of a visa or refund of the amount charged in case of refusal.
The visa application is deemed admissible after the current fee is charged.
The fees are as follow:
- General fee is 90 euros;
- Reduced fee is 45 euros for children from 6 and under 12 years old.
The reduced fee is also levied on citizens of countries that have facilitation agreements with the European Union: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia, Georgia, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Russia, Serbia and Ukraine.
The following persons are exempted from the fee:
- Children under 6 years of age (at the date of delivery of the visa application);
- Students and teachers traveling on a study or training trip;
- Researchers traveling for the purposes of scientific research;
Representatives of non-profit organizations aged up to 25 years old who participate in seminars, conferences, cultural sporting events organized by non-profit organizations;
Family members of nationals of EU or Swiss member states.
Schengen visas for family members of citizens of the European Union and Switzerland
The Visa Code and Community legislation provide for preferential treatment for certain family members of EU / Swiss citizens (including Portuguese), exempting them from paying and presenting certain documents.
Who is considered familiar for these purposes?
Only “family member” of the EU / Swiss citizen is considered to be:
Spouse or whoever lives with him/her in the facto union (duly attested by presenting a copy of the marriage certificate or declaration, given by the Parish Council or the Consulate, who has lived in a the facto union for more than two (2) years );
Descendants under the age of 21 or (provenly) dependent – stepchildren are included as long as they are part of the household;
The ascendants (proof has to be submitted) dependents – parents and in-laws who live in the house.
Family members of nationals of EU or Swiss member states are exempted from payment of fees.

National Visas
National visas are meant for individuals traveling to Portugal for durations that surpass ninety (90) days. There are two types:
- Temporary Stay Visa
- Residence Visas
- Temporary Stay Visa
- Temporary Stay Visa up to 1 year for the purpose of:
- Medical treatment purpose
- To accompany a family member who undergoes medical treatment
- Transfer of workers for provision of services or professional training
- Independent professional activity
- Highly qualified activity / scientific research / academic teaching for less than one (1) year
- Amateur sports
- Study programs in educational establishments, student exchange, unpaid or voluntary professional internship less than one year
- Seasonal work purposes for a period over 90 days
- Academic or professional training
Residence Visas
Residence Visas for stays longer than 1 year for the purposes of:
- Subordinate work activity
- Independent activity / entrepeneurs/ start ups
- Scientific or highly qualified research activity, for a period exceeding one (1) year
- Study / research / volunteer / student exchange
- Family reunification
- Residence visa for the establishment of residence for retired people, religious and people living on incomes
National Visa Fees
The visa application charges an amount that is applicable for the processing of the visa application but does not guarantee a visa or repayment of the money if a refusal occurs.
The application of a visa becomes admissible when the present fee is levied on the applicant.
The tariffs applied are as below:
Residence Visa-90 euros
Temporary Stay Visa -90 euros.

Appeal
Appeals can be filed as walk-in applicants without prior appointments at Gerry’s. However, an appeal must be lodged within the timeframe indicated: Complaint with the author of the act, within 15 working days from the date the interested party was informed of it.
